📋 Irrigation Buying Guide — Choosing the Right Fittings & Components

Poly pipe barbed fittings: Barbed push-fit fittings are the most common connection type in low-pressure irrigation. The barb grips the inside of the poly pipe when pushed in, and a clamp or worm-drive clip secures it under pressure. Always match the fitting size to your pipe's internal diameter, not its outer diameter. Most domestic poly pipe in South Africa runs at 13mm, 16mm, 20mm or 25mm ID. For permanent systems under higher pressure, use Full Flow compression fittings instead of barbed push-fit.

Drip irrigation: Drip systems use 16mm or 17mm brown poly pipe as the main lateral line, with barbed tees and elbows at change-of-direction points and inline drippers or drip stakes inserted directly into the pipe. Size your header pipe at least one size larger than the laterals to maintain even pressure across all zones. A pressure regulator at the inlet is recommended if your supply pressure exceeds 2.5 bar.

Microjets and sprinklers: Microjets are suited to closely spaced plantings — vegetables, flower beds and orchards — where low-angle, fine-droplet coverage is needed. The spray angle (90°, 180° or 360°) determines the coverage pattern. Mount microjets on a riser stake above the crop canopy where possible to reduce blockage from foliage. Operating pressure is typically 1–2 bar.

Threaded fittings: BSP (British Standard Pipe) is the standard thread form used in South African irrigation and plumbing. Male BSP fittings thread into female BSP sockets. Reducing nipples and bushes allow you to step down between pipe sizes. Use PTFE (Teflon) tape on all male threads before assembly.

Controllers and automation: Irrigation controllers operate solenoid valves to open and close irrigation zones on a timer or schedule. Match the controller's voltage (24V AC is standard) and zone count to your system. Battery-operated controllers and smart WiFi/Bluetooth tap timers suit smaller garden systems without a 24V transformer.

Valves and isolation: Ball valves are used for manual zone isolation in smaller systems. Butterfly valves suit larger-diameter mains (63mm and up). Solenoid valves provide automatic zone control when wired to an irrigation controller. A non-return valve on the pump outlet prevents backflow when the system shuts down.
