📋 Pump Buying Guide — How to Choose the Right Pump

Pressure & booster pumps: Size according to the number of bathrooms and outlets used simultaneously, plus your roof tank height (head). A typical 3-bedroom home with municipal or tank-fed supply needs roughly 0.5-1.1kW; larger homes or homes running irrigation alongside household use need higher flow (LPM) and VSD auto-pressurisation for smooth, quiet operation.

Borehole pumps: Sizing depends on borehole depth (total dynamic head), the static and drawdown water level, casing diameter (commonly 4" in SA), and your required daily yield in litres. We match the submersible motor's kW rating and voltage/phase to your power supply — including solar PV options for off-grid boreholes.

Drainage & sewage pumps: Choose based on the maximum vertical lift (head) to your discharge point and the largest particle size the pump must pass. Vortex impeller pumps handle debris-laden water; cutting-system pumps are required for sewage with solids, allowing discharge through smaller-diameter pipework.

Pool pumps: Match motor power (HP/kW) to your pool's volume so the full pool turns over once every 6-8 hours through your existing filter. If replacing an existing pump, matching the current motor's power rating is usually sufficient.

Pond & water feature pumps: Size by pond volume and turnover time (aim for a full turnover every 1-2 hours for koi ponds) and the head height to your waterfall or fountain outlet — head height reduces effective flow, so always check the pump's flow-at-head specification.

Control boxes & spares: Submersible motor control boxes must match the motor's power rating, voltage and phase exactly. Adding a float switch or pressure switch gives automatic dry-run protection and extends pump lifespan.
