Electrical Buying Guide – Read Before You Choose

Choosing the Right Electrical Component

The correct isolator, breaker, enclosure or contactor keeps your installation safe, compliant and reliable. Undersized or incorrectly rated components can fail, trip unnecessarily or create a safety risk.

Voltage, Phase & Rating

  • Supply type – Confirm single-phase (230V) or three-phase (380V) before ordering
  • Amperage rating – Match the component to your circuit's maximum load, not just the connected device
  • Breaking capacity (kA) – Check the fault-current rating of breakers and fuses, especially in industrial or high-demand installations

Understanding IP Ratings

IP ratings describe protection against dust and water ingress. IP44 suits general indoor or covered outdoor use; IP65 is dust-tight and protected against water jets, suited to outdoor and washdown areas; IP66/IP67 handle harsher, high-pressure water exposure. Match the enclosure or isolator's IP rating to where it will be installed.

Isolators vs Circuit Breakers vs Contactors

Isolators provide manual, lockable disconnection for maintenance safety — they do not protect against overload or fault current. Circuit breakers and earth leakage units protect wiring and people from overload, short circuit and earth faults. Contactors switch motors and loads automatically, typically controlled by a starter, timer or control circuit.

Sizing Enclosures & Distribution Boards

Choose enclosure size based on the number and size of components it must house, plus space for wiring and future additions. For distribution boards, count the number of circuits (ways) required now and allow spare capacity for future circuits.

Brands We Carry

Onesto, MCE, CBI, Chint, Schenker and Crabtree — trusted names for South African electrical installations.

Important Safety Note

Electrical installation and wiring work should be carried out by a suitably qualified electrician in accordance with South African wiring regulations. Zisabo supplies components for use by qualified installers — please confirm compatibility and compliance requirements before installation.
